so it's study week! my first exam is friday -- physics (*boo). next one is on monday -- microbiology (*ugh). and my last one is on tuesday -- biochemistry (*eeeeeee!). all the study/memorization-intensive ones. i submitted a 10-page paper on memory and identity as a theme in stories by Israeli authors - which is a relief. i LOVED that class although it got awkward from time to time.
why?
because it was a class of 9 people (including me) against a professor. completely discussion oriented with a little bit of lecture. focus? Voices from Modern Israel. Everyone else in the class had a reason to be there: religion majors, international studies majors, political science majors, majority of whom were Jewish. It was amusing just introducing myself at the beginning of the year: Hi, i'm grace, from singapore (obviously asian) who is a Biology major pretending to be a Biochem major - either way a science major who has absolutely no reason to be in this class apart from the fact that I read the bible and that i think it's way cool.
yoroshiku onegaishimasu (^-^)
hahaha, but gosh, it was just such an awesome class and i know at some point in my life a trip to Israel is a must!
okay, next up on the agenda: CONEY ISLAND! you know how in A&W they have coney dogs? yeah well, i went to the place where it originated from! it was actually a glorious theme park in the late 1800s but world war II, 2 fires and bankruptcy have really run it down. now, it's as if the place is stuck in that time - a bit sketchy, a bit like what R. L. Stine would describe it to be. creepy. but it was sooo interesting. i'm glad i went there though it was rather saddening.
i also went to a freak show - like ripleys... pictures weren't allowed inside, but i basically got to see a guy hammer a 3-inch long nail through his nasal cavity - followed by a power drill TURNED ON. then he released a mouse trap onto his tongue. after that i saw a pint-sized girl swallow a dagger. then a SWORD at least HALF her body long, and 2.5 inches wide. I'm not kidding. and she got some dude from the audience to pull it out from her throat while she was BENT at a 90º angle. CRAZY. i was nearing screaming point.
this is what some of the posters hanging in the lobby looked like - i actually got shouted at for taking these... they didn't state that there was no photography in the lobby... gah. but we had to leave the show early because the van taking us back to school had to leave - it was a 3 hour trip each way... so yeah, and it was sunday.
next... VXF senior farewell! crazy. it was so sad. the exec team planned the event so me and rich emceed the first half, then binky and sam did the second half... just hearing people give testimonies of how each senior had somehow touched their life in some way. and the senior just talking about how God changed their world at vassar - it makes me just really grateful because God is working here and so many people are testifying to it - to reaffirm God's love for us and how in the Christian fellowship so many experience His love through each other. a couple of pictures -
that cross picture louis and jen are holding up was their farewell gift - a collage of memories centered around a cross. all these are my favourite people. saying goodbye is going to be so hard. i'm just really thankful that i'm going to be hanging around for graduation because that means i get to say goodbye to them during their last moments at vassar. sigh & sob!
alright, that's it for now... i've spent about half an hour writing this. time to do some physics, yo!
